Wonder Women

The Women Returner to Work group from Newton Aycliffe Community Learning Centre, nominated by Linda Skinner for their exceptional standard of work, were successful in winning Bishop Auckland College’s Outstanding Group Award.

Opening Times

Monday - Thursday 9.00am - 5.00pm

Courses available roll on, roll off (meaning you can enrol throughout the year)
  • City and Guilds Start IT (iTQ)

Progression from Computers for the Terrified (see below) or suitable for those who have keyboard and mouse skills.  An introduction to wordprocessing, IT fundamentals and using Internet and email.

  • City and Guilds Level 1 Award/Certificate for IT Users

Units that can be covered in the qualification include: wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics, desktop publishing, security for IT users and improving productivity in IT.

  • City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate for IT Users

Units that can be covered in the qualification include: wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics and improving productivity in IT.

Taught courses available at the Centre are:
  • FREE Computers for the Terrified

This course includes a brief introduction to a computer, wordprocessing and Internet and email.  The course is suitable for complete beginners and there are no entry requirements.

  • City and Guilds Bookkeeping and Accounts Level 1

Covering double entry bookkeeping, cash accounts, trade discounts, sales and purchase day books and trial balance.

  • City and Guilds Computerised Accounts Level 1

Covering customer and supplier accounts, invoices, bank receipts and payments, nominal codes, management reports and trial balance.

  • NOCN Business Administration Award Level 1

Covering filing skills, main classifications of filing, cross referencing and tracing files, Data Proctection Act, understanding business communication, effective and ineffective communication and individual and group behaviour in teams.

  • FREE City and Guilds Maths up to Level 2
  • FREE City and Guilds English up to Level 2
  • FREE Work Club – covering confidence building, interview skills, mock interviews, job search, completing CVs/training/job application forms

Maths and English

Community Learning Centres at Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Crook and Newton Aycliffe

There are four Community Learning Centres based at Barnard Castle (Teesdale Training), Bishop Auckland (Newgate), Crook and Newton Aycliffe.
These courses offer a ‘roll-on, roll-off’ facility so that you can attend on a day and time that fits in with your lifestyle. You will be supported by friendly approachable staff who will guide you through your learning journey.

The four Community Learning Centres specialise in the following:

  • Computers for the Terrified: for those who have never used a computer before
  • City and Guilds Start IT for the absolute beginner covering: basic Wordprocessing, IT Fundamentals and Internet and Email
  • City and Guilds in ICT (Level 1) covering: Wordprocessing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation Graphics, Desktop Publishing, Security for IT Users and Improving Productivity
  • City and Guilds in ICT (Level 2) covering: Wordprocessing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation Graphics and Improving Productivity
