Expanding Higher Education at Bishop Auckland College

Bishop Auckland College is in the final stages of a £40m new build on two sites. The new build is taking place in 3 phases. The first phase on our Woodhouse Lane campus was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal in January 2008.
The College is working with the University of Sunderland to develop a Higher Education Gateway centre at the College which will be incorporated into the College’s phase 2 new build developments, due to open autumn 2009.  The Centre will reflect the College’s commitment to develop a strong framework for the delivery of higher level teaching and learning, and will be used exclusively for HE students.
The College is delighted that it is now a full strategic partner within the University of Sunderland HE/FE partnership. This follows the successful development of a range of highly successful Foundation Degree and Teacher Education programmes over recent years.

There are Foundation Degrees in Applied Art, Creative Technologies for Music and Performance, Education & Care, Counselling, Health & Social Care, Working with Young People (Youth Work), Complementary Therapies, Computing and Leadership & Management along with Teacher Training courses and year 1 of the BA Ed Degree programme.

Joanna Tait, Principal & Chief Executive Bishop Auckland College said:

“Other higher level programmes are being developed with the University and all curriculum areas within the College are planning to offer Higher Education progression options by 2010. These developments will also include a wide range of excellent training opportunities for local employers to be able to meet any higher level skills requirements for their workforce.
It is vital for the ongoing education and training of local people that they can take their Further Education studies to a higher level here at their local FE College in a wonderful environment.”

Foundation Degrees Explained

A Foundation Degree is different from a conventional Degree, as it has been developed directly with industry professionals and employers to meet the specialist skills and knowledge required for that industry. It provides a way for you to improve your qualifications and career prospects, while in employment.

Foundation Degrees are relatively new qualifications that started in 2000. They can be studied part time (with a work placement element). Some Foundation Degrees are delivered on a full time basis for those groups of learners who are not in employment (Applied Art page 09 and Creative Technologies for Music and Performance page 25). In some cases you will be able to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree by progressing on to the final year of a BA (Hons), BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) Degree at University.

Why choose a Foundation Degree?
  • They are open to all ages of learners with the appropriate  qualifications
  • They are exactly what you will need to launch your career
  • You will work on practical projects which simulate real environments
  • They are just what employers are looking for
  • You will be able to study while you work
  • They provide a mix of both academic and practical skills
  • You will receive a high level of support
  • They have agreed progression routes to professional qualifications and top-up degrees
