Course overview

Supporting Teaching and Learning in schools offers a range of career opportunities in primary, secondary and special education. Working under the supervision of the teacher or others in the school, you will play a vital part in enabling pupils to reach their individual potential.

Course requirements

Entry requirements: GCSE grade A*-C or equivalent Level 2 literacy and numeracy. An interview and short assessment will assess your suitability and interest in the subject. Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification from 2011 onwards. Due to the nature of the course and qualification it is a requirement that all students have a clear Disclosure and Barring Service check

What will I do?

You must complete work a placement and gain experience working in a primary school setting within a supportive role to a child or children with special educational needs or additional needs. The placement can be employment or on a substantial voluntary role (this must be discussed with the tutor at interview) support from the school setting is essential and references of your suitability and opportunity to support SEN provision will be requested. Assessment within the workplace forms a large part of the gathering of evidence to complete this qualification.

What will it give me?

A qualification and practical experience which will enable you to apply for a variety of support roles in both primary and secondary education.

What can I do when I finish?

You can have the opportunity to progress onto the Foundation Degree in Education & Care or gain employment.
