Course overview

This Level 1 Award in Forest School Ethos and Principles is an introduction to Forest School for professionals. This course is aimed at individuals with little or no experience of working in the outdoors, and aims to build knowledge and confidence in the safe use of equipment and tools.

This course is ideal for those people who are wanting to gain skills for working outdoors with children and young people, those who want to explore Forest Schools within their own setting or those who wish to support a trained Forest Schools practitioner.

Course requirements

This will be mainly decided at interview and each individual candidate will be assessed for suitability and background. As with any Woodland site there are obstacles to navigate, you must disclose any mobility issues or health needs. You must have a clean DBS (criminal disclosure) to work with children. Candidates would be expected to already have a professional qualification such as: Teaching Assistant, Early Years Practitioner, Teacher. As well as individuals who work in provisions such as: Cadets/Scout/Guide leaders, Youth and Care providers, Play leaders.

What will I do?

The course will allow you to look at using the outdoor environment to facilitate individual needs and to encourage the development of personal skills such as confidence and self-esteem. You will learn basic woodland skills alongside a knowledge of the flora and fauna within our site Forest School. (We can offer this course to schools and settings within your own wooded area *group training costs can be discussed)

You will learn how the outdoors can be used to encourage all areas of development, understand factors that affect children’s behaviour and strategies for the outdoor environment. We will also look at how the outdoor environment encourages resilience and independence alongside promoting balanced social and emotional growth.

What will it give me?

A qualification and practical experience which would enable you to progress to the Level 2 or Level 3 Forest School qualifications. It will enhance your professional skills. You could apply to be a Forest School Leader after a level 3.

Materials needed

Clothing and footwear appropriate to the weather and conditions. You must bring water and packed lunch. Most other equipment will be provided by the College (if in your own School setting it can be arranged prior). Other materials that may be required such as writing equipment and sun cream for example will be of benefit which can be stored in the outdoor facility. We will have access to a toilet.

What can I do when I finish?

You can support Forest School groups alongside a qualified Level 3 Forest School Lead. You can be considered for progression onto the Level 2 or Level 3 Forest School qualifications.
