Course overview

The AIM Access to HE Diploma is a level 3 qualification, regulated by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).

This fully recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma Education course is ideal for anyone looking to change their career or return to education.

This course is the equivalent to three A Levels, allowing you to progress to a degree at university or Bishop Auckland college after completing your course.

The Access to HE Diploma (Policing and Criminology) aims to develop student’s knowledge and skills in a range of different policing and criminology related professions.

You will develop understanding of the powers of the police and explore what is meant by criminal justice. This will enable you to examine the role of the police, criminal behaviour and practical approaches to managing and responding to crime in society.

You don't need to sit any exams as part of your course, you are assessed via your assignments.

You'll also receive guidance to help you with your UCAS application.

In less than one year this means that you can achieve everything you need to move on to university.

Course requirements

There is an interview for the Education course and some screening tests.

It is desirable that you have a Level 2 in Maths and English - this can be Functional Skills or GCSE grade 4/C or higher. If you have not achieved Maths or English you will need to study these alongside your course. Some courses at HE require these qualification as an entry requirement.

Our Pre-Access to HE course can help you build on your study skills if you don’t feel ready for Level 3 studies.

You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees, which is written off if you complete your university course within the time given by the university you apply to.

You may qualify for support with your course costs e.g., stationery and meals.

You will also get free support with childcare.

What will I do?

You will undertake units in policing and criminology, sociology and social policy, psychology, health studies, politics, law, work placement and computing subject groups including:

• Crime Prevention and Control

• Sex and Gender Studies

• Prejudice and Discrimination

• Decision Making in the UK

Throughout the Diploma, you will also study a variety of develop transferable skills such as working with others in teams, utilising evidence, effective communication and explaining human behaviour.

You will also learn skills such as:

1. Evaluate different methods to crime and criminal justice

2. Understand the importance of respect, ethics, accountability and integrity in policing

3. Articulate how psychological and sociological perspectives help to explain criminal behaviour

4. Outline the powers of the police

5. Develop core research, referencing and study skills for success in HE

What will it give me?

You will attain a Level 3 Diploma in Education on this programme, which will enable you to apply for university.

All Level 3 units are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction which will inform your UCAS points for HE.

You must achieve 60 credits in total which are used to calculate UCAS points:

• 45 graded credits

• 15 ungraded

Materials needed

A laptop computer is recommended, but the College also has dedicated IT facilities for degree students and adults.
